Recipes for Celebrating Mom

Being a mom is the work I never knew I’d love this much. It’s noisy and messy and exhausting, and some days I feel like I’m barely holding it together. But somewhere in the chaos of feeding three hungry kids while Jake’s gone and the furnace is making that familiar groan, I realized that Nana Ruth must have felt this way too. That this — the kitchen, the family, the repetition of making something warm for people you love — this is what Mother’s Day should really be about.

It’s not about being pampered or taking a break (though those things are nice when they happen). It’s about being seen. It’s about someone understanding that feeding a family of five on a real budget, making sure everyone gets their favorite thing sometimes, teaching Clara how to make something from scratch, letting Wyatt pick the dessert — that this is the work. That it matters.

Last year on Mother’s Day, the kids tried to make me breakfast. Wyatt managed the pancakes — a little thick, a little uneven, but cooked through (a win). Clara did the scrambled eggs, and they were actually good. Mason’s job was setting the table, which he did with three forks at my place and none at anyone else’s. Jake was home that weekend, which meant he supervised from the doorway with his coffee, trying not to intervene. The toast was burnt. The orange juice had pulp, which Mason doesn’t understand I specifically avoid. It was the best breakfast I’d had in months.

That’s what I want these recipes to be for the moms reading this. Not perfection. Not a performance. Just the feeling that someone cared enough to try. Whether you’re cooking for your own mom, or your kids are cooking for you, or you’re just treating yourself to something that isn’t cereal eaten standing over the sink — these recipes are for the women who do the daily work of keeping a family fed and warm.

So these recipes are for the moms. The ones who cook every day whether anyone notices or not. The ones who are building traditions with their hands and their patience. The ones who are, right now, doing the Nana Ruth work of their own families. You’re seen. Your work is worth something warm.
